Brownsville, like all of Texas, has no income tax. In place of an income tax is a variety of other taxes used to support the public schools, roads and services. The two most notable are property taxes and sales tax.

The Cameron Appraisal District (CAD) is responsible for appraising property for the purpose of ad valorem property tax assessment on behalf of the local governing bodies in Cameron County. The appraisal district is a political subdivision of the State of Texas.

Ad valorem taxes are levied against real estate property based on the appraised market value of real property. Tax rates are based on per $100 assessed valuation.
