Museums & History

Brownsville, Texas is a place of museums and historic sites that interpret the city’s past. A number of Brownsville’s premier cultural attractions, including two with significant historical resonance, are located between 6th and 7th streets near Dean Porter Park. The area has been designated the Mitte Cultural District in honor of benefactors Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte. The Mitte Cultural Education Center houses the Children’s Museum of Brownsville, the Costumes of the Americas Museum, and the Camille Playhouse. This distinctive area’s history-related sites also include the Old City Cemetery and the Historic Brownsville Museum that provide a unique glimpse into the past.

The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art (BMFA) features works by local and international artists and hosts the International Art Show every April. The King Tutankhamun, Egyptian Treasures exhibit will be featured until October 2014, with a beautiful selection of artwork and delicate Egyptian treasures such as relief panels, the inner Sarcophagus and Funerary Mask of King Tutankhamun, and reminders of rituals practiced by this ancient culture. Wings of the City by Jorge Marín, one of Mexico’s most important contemporary figurative artists, will be displayed at the BMFA until June 2014. Wings of the City is an urban artistic project that includes nine large-scale bronze sculptures focused on promoting a dialogue between the public and the artwork, through highlighting the esthetic experience of any person who walks by and views it.

Additionally, Downtown Brownsville has a great number of historically significant buildings identified with the Texas Historical Plaques, part of the Brownsville Heritage Trail. Be sure to walk around the Brownsville historic downtown to discover a variety of architectural designs from the various periods, starting in the mid 1850’s to the present time modern structures.
